Hey guys! In this video I wanted to show you a comparison of performance between the '90s legends, the Focus mk 1 and the Golf mk 4 .

The Ford Focus mk1 debuted in 1999 and we can consider this car as the grandfather of today's (at least) hatchbacks design. It featured futuristic, curvy lines, independent rear suspension (rally heritage) , quite a lot of technology for that time and a wide palette of engines.
The 1.4 Zetec is definetly the weakest in all aspects except maybe reliability. However, this engine is underpowered for this body, at least with 3-4 people and luggage.
The 1.6 petrol in 100 and 101 hp variations is among the most popular choices and it is reliable, economical but again, not really powerful enough, especially in the estate version.
The 1.8 tddi is slow and smokey but it drives you around with so little fuel it's impossible not to give it an honorable mention.
The 1.8 tdci Ford Focus mk1 wasn't that great as it had problems with the fuel injectors and turbos. However, if you're lucky enough, you can get a bargain on one and have a powerful-ish, economical smokey diesel to have fun around town on pocket change.

The Golf mk4 keeped a more conservative design , with many resemblances with its predecessor, the Golf mk3 but with some much needed upgrades. At that time, you could get a basic 1.4 petrol with 75 hp and have the car fully specced. Weird times.
Probably the best engine of this era is the 90 hp 1.9 TDI ( ALH especially). These engines where often "convinced" to run on stuff different than diesel. Vegetable oil is an example. And thus, you can drive behind a Golf 4 TDI which smells like french fries from the exhaust.

On a more serious note, their top performance, the Ford Focus ST170, the Focus RS, the Golf GTI and Golf R32 are still delivering amazing performance and they will not cease to amaze us when we see them competing in drag races or when they swoop by our slow cars on the highway.
