SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - An “X” marks the pumps with bad gas at the Sunoco on Hamilton Avenue in Springfield Township. Several customers complained of damage to their cars after bad gas was sold at the station Monday morning.

Customer Jennifer Washington says the bad gas caused thousands of dollars in damage to her car and also caused her to lose her job.

“I got let go because it was my second day because I called off, but I was on the side of the expressway for two hours waiting for a tow truck,” said Washington.

Washington said once she got her car towed to a mechanic, she was told she would need a new fuel line and a new fuel pump.

"Nissan told me $2,200,” said Washington when asked how much the repairs would cost.

The gas distributor, Triumph Energy, confirms to Local 12 that bad gas was sold at the Sunoco Monday morning. A company spokesperson said heavy rains caused water to leak into the fuel tank. The spokesperson also said the dealer will pay for the damage to the vehicles.

Washington says Triumph Energy is trying to make it right and she appreciates their efforts, but she also said her experience at the gas station was less than pleasant.

“They didn't say, 'OK, go get it fixed; we'll reimburse you; this is a process; this is what we have to do and then we'll get back to you.' It's just, 'Oh well, it happened, bye,'” said Washington about the gas station.

In an email to Local 12, a Triumph Energy spokesperson said the following:

The station on Hamilton Avenue is a customer of ours who owns the location. The problem with the gas at our customer’s site occurred when the heavy rains fell on Saturday. Somehow water leaked into the tank and caused the alcohol to separate from the gasoline. When the rain water got into the tank the alcohol and the water went to the bottom of the tank where it was pumped to the dispenser. It appears that three to four customers received the product before the dealer closed the premium tank where the problem occurred.
At this time, the dealer is having the equipment inspected to find out how the water got into his tank. When the defect is found, it will be repaired and new gasoline will be placed in the tank.
The dealer is taking care of the customers who experienced the problem and will pay for the damage incurred on the vehicles.
When Local 12 visited the gas station Monday evening, the clerks said a manager was unavailable to talk.
