Let's learn Kikuyu
Hello Friends, this is Boniface for Kikuyu and today we are going to learn about consonants in our Let’s Practice Kikuyu, Tujifunzeni Kikuyu, Nĩtwĩrutei Gĩkũyũ (session). This is going to be very key in making sure that you start reading Kikuyu right away. Let’s learn some Kikuyu:

Consonants in Kikuyu is our lesson for today. Last time we handled vowels in Kikuyu. We found out that there are 7 vowels- the normal 5 in English plus two more, that is, ĩ and ũ.

The 7 Kikuyu vowels are: a e i o u ĩ and ũ. There can also be combinations for those vowels but these are not so important right now. This is Boniface once again and welcome.

The Kikuyu Alphabet is exactly like the one in English- but you need to add ĩ and ũ. These are the letters we use:

Notes:

• D and J never stand alone in Kikuyu language. There has to be an N before them in writing. The “n” sound might be subtle or silent in spoken Kikuyu, but letter N must always precede D and J in Kikuyu writing.

• There are letters that are excluded. These are:
F, P, Q, S, V, X, and Z.

• Ĩĩ and Ũũ are to be included.

Making of Kikuyu Words

A syllable can be made of:

• A single vowel. For example, ĩ

• VV, vowel + vowel, example, ĩĩ = yes

• CV, consonant + vowel, example, ma = the truth. A sentence example, nĩaria ma= he/she has spoken the truth.

• CCV, consonant + consonant + vowel, example, nda = stomach. A sentence example, nĩndĩrarĩo nĩ nda = I have a stomach ache.

• CCCV, consonant + consonant + consonant + vowel, ngwa = thunder.

Note, not all syllables in this table that are used, rather these are meant to aid in reading possible Kikuyu syllables

ba be bi bo bu bĩ bũ = b is read like an f

ca ce ci co cu cĩ cũ = c is read like “sh”, another way is “s”. Either is totally acceptable- only that you stick with one for uniformity/ consistency.

ga ge gi go gu gĩ gũ = g always sounds like the 2nd g in gag

Growing your vocabulary:

baba = father
cũcũ = grandma
ndundu = bat
ndwari = ailment/ sickness
mbembe = maize (corn)
mbwe = fox
guka = grandma
