Transcript: Per InsideEVs, France just launched the world’s first in-road wireless charging system on a public highway with real traffic, and it's a big step forward for electric transportation. Built by Tel Aviv-based Electreon, this nearly one-mile stretch of the A10 motorway near Paris allows certain vehicles to charge while driving. Early tests show the system can safely deliver over 300 kilowatts of peak power and averages above 200 kilowatts—comparable to Tesla’s Supercharger V3 network.

Four vehicles, including a heavy-duty truck, are currently outfitted to use the system. The biggest promise lies with freight transport: trucks could recharge on the go, meaning they wouldn’t need massive battery packs or long stops at charging stations. That could cut down on rare earth materials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions—freight accounts for around 16% of France’s total.

While very much still in pilot phase, this tech has the potential to reshape how electric trucks and other vehicles stay powered during long-distance travel. The group behind the highway install, including VINCI Autoroutes, confirmed the roadway is built to endure decades of wear and traffic. Similar test projects have taken place elsewhere, but France is now the first to put it to work on an actual highway.
