The Volvo Ocean Race will feature an all-female team for the first time since 2001-02 after global hygiene and forest company SCA announced they would enter a women's crew for the next edition in 2014-15.

The team are the first to announce an entry for what will be the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race race, starting from Alicante in the second half of 2014.

The Volvo Ocean Race all-female challengers are the first team to confirm an order for the new Volvo Ocean Race 65-foot one-design boat, details of which were announced by the race in June. The new Volvo Ocean Race high-performance boat is being built by a consortium of boatyards in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and Italy and will make it significantly cheaper for teams to mount a competitive campaign. The Volvo Ocean Race will ensure a minimum of eight boats are built, with the goal of getting between eight and 10 teams on the start line for the 12th edition of the race. The first of the boats will be finished in mid-2013.

The Volvo Ocean Race new design puts less of a premium on physical strength, and means all-female teams should be competitive in the Volvo Ocean Race, which is one of sailing's Big Three events along with the America's Cup and the Olympics. The last time an all-female team competed in the Volvo Ocean Race was in 2001-02, when Lisa Charles (now Lisa McDonald) skippered Amer Sports Too. The first Volvo Ocean Race all-female team to compete were Maiden, skippered by Tracy Edwards, back in 1989-90. The full list is as follows:

Volvo Ocean Race 1989-90 Maiden/Tracy Edwards
Volvo Ocean Race 1993-94 US Women's Challenge/Nance Franck, later Heineken/Dawn Riley
Volvo Ocean Race 1997-98 EF Education/Christine Guilou
Volvo Ocean Race 2001-02 Amer Sports Too Lisa Charles (now McDonald)

The last woman sailor in the Volvo Ocean Race was Adrienne Cahalan, who was navigator on Brasil 1 for a single leg in 2005-06.

The 2014–15 Volvo Ocean Race will be the 12th edition of the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race. For the first time, the Volvo Ocean Race will be a one-design. The Volvo One-Design was designed by Farr Yacht Design in response to concerns about safety and cost. The Volvo Ocean Race will ensure a minimum of eight boats are built. The aim is to reduce participation cost to around 15 million euros per entry.
Volvo Ocean Race Defending champions, Groupama, have announced they will not compete again.[3]

Volvo Ocean Race Team SCA will field an all female crew. The rules allow all female crews to field three extra crew members. The entry is skippered by British yachtswoman Samantha Davies.
Volvo Ocean Race Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing return and will again be skippered by Ian Walker.[5]
Volvo Ocean Race Team Brunel of the Netherlands have announced they will be entering the competition with seven-time participant Bouwe Bekking as skipper.[6]
Volvo Ocean Race Dongfeng of China is a half-Chinese amateur, half-International professional squad skippered by Charles Caudrelier.
Volvo Ocean Race Team Alvimedica is the American entry in the race. The Turkish sponsored yacht is skippered by Charlie Enright.
Volvo Ocean Race MAPFRE will be the home team to begin the race. The Spanish entry is skippered by Iker Martinez.
The final Volvo Ocean Race boat, Team Vestas Wind, is sponsored by wind energy leader Vestas. The Danish registered squad is skippered by Australian Olympian Chris Nicholson.
The race will again begin in Alicante before heading to Cape Town in South Africa.[7] The race will also stop in Auckland,[8] Abu Dhabi,[5] Lisbon,[9] Itajaí[10] Sanya,[11] Lorient and Newport, Rhode Island before ending in Gothenburg.
The point standings will be done via low points. The winner of each leg/in-port race will receive 1 point, runner up will receive 2 points, and so on down to the final finisher who will receive 7 points. The organizers also removed the weighting of the open water legs which was deemed to significantly reduce the importance of the in-port regattas.
