Trains in the Hills: Either Side of Shap

Logs, RHTT, Departmental and Intermodals!

For a change I took the opportunity to film at Eden Valley Up Goods Loop, south of Penrith, and at Greenholme, just north of Tebay, to see trains winding their way to and from Shap Summit.

On arrival we found 'The Logs', diverted from the Settle & Carlisle line, in the loop - where it stood for 90 minutes while a number of other southbound trains passed. I really like the long view you can get of the southbound trains rounding the curve from Clifton village (and site of the long-gone Eden Valley Junction). The view of Northbound trains is also great with the three-arch overbridge just to the north of the long-closed Clifton & Lowther station. The views from that bridge are also good, but we didn't take the opportunity of using it.

Greenholme, at the bottom of Shap bank, shows the difference the gradient makes there to trains. Passenger trains sail up without any issues whilst the freight trains are obviously working hard and slow down. The other thing about this location is you can see almost all the way up to Shap Summit. Did I mention its very close to the fabulous Shap Services northbound - the food and coffee are great, even if pricey.

Among other trains, we saw the Rail Head Treatment Train heading south - nearly missed it as it almost silently rolled down the bank when I wasn't near the camcorder, hence one shot is a bit distant.

We went back to Eden VAlley hoping that the skies might be clear for the last rays of sunshine. Sadly there were dark clouds in the west and we had to make the most of what light there was.
