America Has Changed Toward Race! 1950s Expert Studied Equal Rights Attitudes

Описание к видео America Has Changed Toward Race! 1950s Expert Studied Equal Rights Attitudes

I conducted this interview in 1989 while I was doing interviews for my television series on the 1950s and 1960s and the baby boomer 60s generation. Sadly, I have lost his name but I'm hopeful that someone watching this will recognize him. At the time, he was the leading statistics expert on American attitudes and values. I know that some of my subscribers feel that America is essentially the same or even worse – that nothing has changed for the better. This expert used broad reaching statistics to prove otherwise.

I started my career in the early 60s making documentaries and in the first 10 years, had the opportunity to record people's lives around the country including minorities, poor people, southern farmers, among many others. I witnessed places that were in the midst of change and have now changed in substantive ways.

Equal rights. Civil rights. Freedom. Fairness. I realize that all of these issues are still relevant in America but there is no question, at least in my mind, that American values and attitudes have changed with each new generation growing more accepting of a changing America.

And historians that I have interviewed have shared with me that when one looks back, America has always been changing from the beginning. It is not like things all of a sudden changed in the 1950s. I'm not specifically speaking about Jim Crow laws or black Americans and what they experienced but about all of the cultures that have come to America since the first pilgrims and the Spanish before them.
