The line originally read, “At 7 p.m. a main hatchway caved in; he said…”; Lightfoot began singing it as “At 7 p.m. it grew dark, it was then he said…,” showcasing Lightfoot’s respect for the true story and those involved.

In popular culture, the song's impact has been profound, even serving as fodder for parody during the 1984 United States presidential election, when the comedy troupe Capitol Steps humorously reimagined the ballad, renaming the ship Walter ‘Fritz’ Mondale.
