The seminar presents the results of Sara Mansutti’s PhD research on Cosimo Bartoli, the Medici’s agent in Venice from 1562 to 1572, and his role in the city’s news network. The research explores key questions:
How and from whom did Bartoli gather information?
What part did he play in writing the newsletters?
How were his letters and newsletters connected?
How did he evaluate the reliability of the news he shared?
The seminar will also introduce the digital methods used to analyse over 1,200 letters and newsletters, highlight the main findings, and discuss how this approach can be applied to other collections of handwritten documents, opening new avenues for historical research.
