The publisher Hieronymus Cock played a crucial role in the artistic landscape of the Netherlands in the 16th century. His publishing house in Antwerp contributed significantly to the development and dissemination of various art genres, particularly landscape painting and moral satire.
Beginnings and Thematic Expansion
At the beginning of his publishing career, Hieronymus Cock was inspired by Roman models and published prints based on Italian masters such as Raphael, as well as depictions of ancient sculptures and ruin compositions. However, once his publishing house became successful, he expanded his repertoire thematically and across genres. This was partly due to commercial interest, in order to explore new, underrepresented themes on the market, but also reflected his personal preferences. An important driving force for this development was the growing national self-confidence in the Netherlands and the desire to break away from Spanish rule. This led to an increased focus on its own history, art, and national traditions.

In his works in the Bosch style, Bruegel developed a decidedly anti-classical style, oriented toward the late Gothic period. His figures are often expressive but anatomically incorrect, which was understood by contemporaries as a return to their own, "old and good" national art tradition. Bruegel's visual language relies less on classical allegories that require knowledge to decipher. Instead, his works are suggestive and intuitively understandable:
