I spotted a major fire in the distance whilst hiking Montaña de Guaza in Tenerife, from where I was standing, it looked like the town I was staying in was burning.

After doing some research, this is what I found:

"On January 11, 2024, a major fire erupted at a composting plant in Parque La Reina, Arona, Tenerife, burning 35,000 m² and 100,000 tons of organic material. The blaze, visible across southern Tenerife, prompted a large-scale emergency response involving 12 firefighting teams, 2 helicopters, and multiple agencies. Authorities warned of prolonged extinguishing efforts due to the nature of the fuel.

Smoke posed no toxic threat but led to health advisories: residents in nearby areas were urged to stay indoors, close windows, and wear masks. Seven people were treated, two hospitalized. About 180 animals from adjacent shelters were evacuated.

The fire threatened the TF-1 highway and a gas station, causing traffic chaos. Firefighters focused on containment, especially along the motorway side, with operations expected to last several days."
