Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system i.e Kidneys, Ureters, Bladder, Urethra

Causes
UtIs are commonly caused by E. Coli bacteria, when it enters the urinary tract through the urethra and begins to spread in the bladder.
Usually the bacteria come from the digestive tract through fecal matter.
UTIs are more common in women due to shorter urethral passage which opens in close proximity to the anus
Other causes include
Bacteria brought over by sexual contact
Taking certain oral antibiotics
Using a vaginal diaphragm for contraception
Using spermicides
Vaginal douching
Hormonal changes with menopause
An enlarged prostate in men

UTI that affects only the Urethra is called Urethritis
When bacteria spreads and multiply in the bladder, it is called Cystitis
If the infection reaches the kidneys, it is called Pyelonephritis, and may result in permanent kidney damage

Treatment Options
Urinary tract infections are usually treated by a course of antibiotics

Prevention tips
Drinks plenty of fluids
Wipe from front to back after bowel movements
Empty the bladder after intercourse
Wear cotton underwear
Avoid the use of perfumed products on the genitals
Avoid Diaphragms, Unlubricated condom or condom treated with spermicide
