Hey, guys Professor Bill of Comic Book University and I’m going to explain Black Lightning in about a minute.
Created by Tony Isabella & Trevor Von Eeden, the character first appeared in his own title “Black Lightning” #1” in April of 1977.
Coming off writing duties for Luke Cage over in Marvel, Tony Isabella came to DC where they were trying to develop a similar African-American superhero to compete with rival Marvel Comics.
The main idea floating at the time was for a character named the Black Bomber who was a white racist who would turn into a black superhero in times of great stress.
Isabella, thankfully, convinced DC execs to go with an idea he’d been developing for a while; that of decathlon gold-medalist Jefferson Pierce, who was the Principal of his old high school in Southside, also known as “Suicide Slum”, an all-but-forgotten section of Metropolis.
There, he fought crime on a local level, but throughout his time in the DC Universe, where he even became Secretary of Education for a short while under orders of President Lex Luthor, he’d helped in several main storylines, including the destruction of “Brother Eye” and the OMAC’s.
While he originally gained his powers from a belt, he was later retconned to have been born with his powers due to the “metagene” introduced in the “Invasion” storyline.
While his powers are mostly electricity-based, due to the ability to manipulate his enhanced bio-electrical energy, he has also learned to manipulate the electromagnetic field.
Using his knowledge of the sciences, Jefferson Pierce can perform such feats as limited flight and force field generation.
The extreme use of his powers, however, have shown him able to restart the heart of Superman after major exposure to kryptonite.
Pierce has two daughters, Anissa and Jennifer, who also act as superheroes with similar powers, using the names Thunder and Lightning, respectively.
Also, Static Shock is NOT a younger version of Black Lightning, people always confuse that.
