Why do Puerto Ricans say “la isla menos Morovis”—the island minus Morovis? In this episode, we visit the small town of Morovis and uncover a surprising historical truth behind that popular phrase. Back in 1853, a deadly cholera epidemic swept through Puerto Rico, claiming over 25,000 lives. Every single municipality reported cases—except for one: Morovis. And that odd phrase? It came from that strange historical footnote: Puerto Rico was hit hard… minus Morovis.

But what is Morovis like today? My wife Zoraida and I decided to find out. Joined by our two grandkids, we explored this sleepy town nestled in the north-central mountains of the island. Morovis sits north of Orocovis, east of Ciales, and west of Corozal. While it’s not the kind of town packed with tourist attractions, it has its own quiet charm—and a deep sense of history. We visited the Parish of Our Lady of Carmen, which dates back to 1823 and has a surprisingly modern feel. Bright, peaceful, and welcoming, it’s a must-see stop if you're passing through.

Of course, we also explored the town square, dedicated to its second mayor, Don Juan Evangelista Rivera. The square shows signs of Puerto Rico’s broader economic challenges—closed businesses, cracked sidewalks, and that sense of pause you often feel in towns hit by hard times. But we were told that changes are coming, including a full renovation of the square. We also looked for “La Patria” bakery, a beloved local shop that’s been part of Morovis since 1862. It was sadly closed, but our search led us straight to the original building—a funny twist you’ll want to see in the video.

We wrapped up our visit at “el puente colora’o,” the famous red bridge—now replaced by a gray steel one—still standing as a symbol of the past. We even went in search of “El Patrón,” a scenic waterfall now on private land.

While some of our plans didn’t pan out, the journey in itself was rich with beauty, surprises, and a reminder of why every town deserves a closer look.
