Chapter 12
When McCandless graduated high school in 1986, he gave Walt a telescope for his birthday. That night he told his dad how, even though they had problems, he really respected him and knew how much he gave to the family. He left Virginia and went all the way to the Pacific. He didn’t return until two days before school started in Atlanta, and he lost 30 pounds.
He had gotten stuck in the Mojave and almost became dehydrated. When he came back, he also picked up a 30-.06 rifle and a machete, which he took to college. He did great in college and became a writer at the school paper.
After some time, he started becoming distant with his parents. When he travelled to California, he found out that when Walt divorced his first wife Marcia for Billie, he wound up keeping two separate families for a while, even having a son with his ex-wife. It’s only when they found out that he and Billie moved to the east coast. McCandless saw this as his childhood being a lie.
He started withdrawing two years into college and would complain about the rich kids at Emory. He was passionate about politics, but his actual beliefs were hard to put down. He liked the concept of small government, but wanted the government to have more food programs. In 1989, he went on a trip for Spring break. He wrote his dad that he was going to Guatemala, but wound up in Fairbanks. His senior year he lived alone in his apartment with a mattress and milk boxes for furniture.
After his graduation, he didn’t contact anyone in his family, including his sister. McCandless knew that if his parents got word from him they’d be able to find him and try and get him home. As time passed, his parents became more and more worried. Billie never left the house without putting a note on their door. Whenever she saw a hitchhiker that looked a little like Chris, they would turn around. In July of 1992, Billie sat up one night thinking she heard Chris calling. She thought she heard him saying “Mom, help me!”
