After 38 years of creating ready to wear, the enfant terrible of French design, Jean Paul Gaultier, presented his final pr�t-a-porter show on Saturday night at the Grand Rex theater in Paris. Along with faithful Gaultier wearers such as French actress Catherine Deneuve, the audience included a range of fashion designers from Alexander Wang to Gareth Pugh, Rick Owens and Pierre Cardin (for whom Gaultier first worked as an assistant).
True to form, Gaultier prepared a show that was pure spectacle, conceived as a beauty show to crown Miss Jean Paul Gaultier 2015. The wacky Spanish actress Rossy de Palma joined expat British presenter Alex Taylor in hosting the show.
Themed segments featured "Miss Mariniere" (stripes), "Miss Tour de France" (referencing the bicycle race), "Miss Meteo" (the television weather girl), "Miss R�dactrice de Mode," (imitations of famous fashion journalists from Grace Coddington to Carine Roitfeld to Suzy Menkes), "Miss Femme de Footballeur" (soccer players' wives), "Miss Vintage" (former models, now long retired), "Miss Smoking" (tuxedos) and "Miss Lucha Libre" (masked Mexican wrestlers). Supermodel Coco Rocha won the crown.
This show could have been a melancholy occasion but Gaultier managed to make it joyous and over-the-top, while presenting a wearable collection that mixed iconic Gaultier looks (bullet bras, sexy tuxedos) and surprises like a large-brimmed, red-lipped hat that resembled a creature from the sea.
Catherine Deneuve, sitting front row, expressed her empathy for women who will no longer be able to wear Gaultier's clothing, unless they have the means to buy haute couture. For those who can afford it, the designer will continue to create two couture collections a year-and says he can now devote himself to entirely new projects as well.
