DAVE
75% of the time I’ve been on this planet I’ve been associated with the Boston Marathon, so it’s important to me, but I do have things in perspective, and I know my health is more important than a road race.

McGillivray has run Boston every year since 1973.

He has been Race Director since 2001.

DAVE
I committed to this and there’s 30,000 people depending on me and the entire team to produce a world-class, quality event and I can’t be worried about me and take my eye off the ball.

He was worried he’d miss the 2019 race.

In 2018, he ran the World Marathon Challenge.

7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days.

Afterwards, he felt discomfort in his chest.

DAVE
Just because you’re fit doesn’t mean you’re healthy. I always thought it did. The realization that maybe we aren’t Superman, that we’re not invincible, that reality can hit you pretty hard.

McGillivray had severe coronary artery disease.

He needed triple bypass open heart surgery.

He only had one question for his surgeon.

DAVE
I asked him, There’s this little jogathon race in Boston in April, and I’ve shuffled through it a few times, what do you think? He didn’t say no, and he didn’t say yes, but he did say, “I would be extremely disappointed if you couldn’t.” When I started this, I was in my thirties, and now I’m in my sixties, so it’s certainly not getting any easier. But this time will definitely be different because I’m going to be more sensitive to how I feel than how fast I go.

McGillivray’s race day was nearly 20 hours long.

DAVE
Whether it’s get off your feet, eat properly, rest properly, I’m doing just the opposite on all of it. It’s not the best way to run 26.2 miles but it’s what I got.

He woke up at 3 a.m.

At 10 a.m. he snacked during course inspections.

DAVE
The whole day was very, very stressful, with the thunderstorms in the morning and not knowing what we were going to do in terms of the athletes, busing them out to the start, would the race be delayed, but it all turned out great.

He didn’t start his run until after 4 p.m.

He was joined by friends from the World Marathon Challenge.

DAVID SAMSON
At the start line, he said, “Hey, listen guys, we’re going to take it a mile at a time, when I run, run, when I walk, walk, and let’s see how it goes.” He actually got stronger as the race went on. We were thinking maybe for the second half, he would become less strong, but it was the opposite. He actually carried all of us to the end.
He finished in 5:42.

McGillivray was initially embarrassed of his diagnosis.

He now hopes others learn from his experience.

DAVE
If you feel something, do something. You have to act. You can’t ignore. You can’t think you’re invincible because it’s really up to you to save yourself.
