The largest remaining freshwater wetland in Lebanon, a remnant of much more extensive marshes and lakes that once existed in the Bekaa Valley. It has been designated an Important Bird Area in the Middle East.The swamp lies on one of the most important bird migration routes in the world, and over 250 species of birds have been recorded in the area.
