Hi everyone, my name is Matt Aquilina with Nexus Baseball and this is Quick Hit, where I quickly cover your questions about hitting mechanics and technique.

Today I am looking at the question – are power hitters born or made?
Just as I did when discussing genetics and velocity for pitchers I also want go back to youth baseball when discussing hitting power. When youth players start hitting some kids are obviously more successful than others at intuitively sequencing their bodies to hit the baseball and hit it harder. These abilities of muscular control are teachable and developable, but they give kids a large advantage in the coaching environments often present at baseball’s lowest level and with the short attention spans of young children. Those who it just clicks for will see the greatest initial success.

As kids grow up and enter high school there starts to become a separation of two approaches to power hitting. The kids that have developed quickest in terms of height and muscularity are now able to use their general strength to hit the ball harder with power. This is the easiest type of power and takes little coaching other than swinging at the ball with general force. Visually coaches will see this growth and encourage these youth athletes to use their power to do so.

Smaller hitters are much more rarely encouraged to hit for power and trained to do so. Instead, smaller hitters that develop a powerful swing usually leverage their sport specific strength better, using the smaller quicker muscles to develop bat speed instead of leveraging their body weight. They use either trained or innate muscle control to generate significant speed.
Both overall strength and muscularity as well as sport specific strength are both developable skills with the right training. The most powerful hitters are those that possess a good deal of general strength but not too much that it takes away from the speed their sport specific strength can provide. The key is to take what is already there inherently and develop the right balance for success.
