A French “bal-folk” in the charming city of Avignon. 

During the travels of the Troubadours Tour in France last year, we stopped in the charming, historical, walled city of Avignon ("a-vee-nyon") to discover the delights it had to offer. 

We were invited by a friend of ours to attend a "bal-folk" (folk ball) taking place in a public cultural centre in the city, and we showed up to be welcomed by a great band (as you can see) and a large group of ball attendees, just waiting to step to the instructions of a dance master. 

Yes, France isn't just accordions along the Seine in Paris, but has a very rich musical history like any other, and coming from England I hear many similarities, bit this time I was also hearing a lot of influences from the East. It's possible that historically we shared a lot more in common with our Eastern neighbours. 

The band was superb, playing a mix of revived bagpipes, flutes, violin and drums (and even a dulcimer, I believe). 

Great to see the French enjoying their traditional music so well. I can't say I've experienced anything like this in England, but then I always explore more when I'm travelling!
