In memory of Donguri who died early in the morning of June 17, 2016 – one year ago today. I will never forget her. I am still heartbroken. Donguri was so wise and compassionate, and gentle. Over the course of one hour she made this impassioned cry for a duration of seven minutes. She didn't often make this call and when she did I noticed she always looked at me first as if she was testing me to see if I had learned her language. Of course I always failed her test. She was the leader of the herd at Nagasaki Bio Park from 2013 up until the time of her death. Even though she was growing ever weaker the other capybaras respected her and did not challenge her for the leadership; they would have been much stronger than her. She was a natural leader who hated aggression. She only had to raise her nose for the other capybaras to understand her wishes. My impression is that she did not have a high regard for humans. Although humans controlled her life they often took decisions which were not in the best interests of the capybaras. She knew that as a leader she would have made life much better for the herd. I'm sure she thought I had been hired by the Biopark to be her servant and I felt very honoured to be in her company. Occasionally a human came over to pet her while she was calling. I couldn't help feeling she thought that humans were a superficial species who had nothing better to do than watch the capybaras as they, the capybaras, went about the serious business of life.
