Joe Don Baker, the legendary actor best known for his tough-guy roles in Walking Tall and the James Bond franchise, has passed away at the age of 89.

Born on February 12, 1936, in Groesbeck, Texas, Baker served in the U.S. Army before launching a long and varied acting career after training at the Actors Studio in New York. He made his screen debut in 1965 and rose to fame with his breakout role as Sheriff Buford Pusser in Walking Tall (1973).

Baker made a unique mark in the James Bond universe—first playing the villain Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights (1987), and later returning as CIA agent Jack Wade in GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), becoming one of the few actors to play both a Bond villain and ally.

Throughout his nearly five-decade career, he appeared in iconic films like Charley Varrick, The Outfit, The Natural, Cape Fear, Fletch, Reality Bites, and Mars Attacks!. On TV, he starred in Eischeid and appeared in classics like Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, and In the Heat of the Night. His acclaimed performance in Edge of Darkness earned him a BAFTA nomination.

Baker retired in 2012 after his final film role in Mud, alongside Matthew McConaughey. He passed away on May 7, 2025. The cause of death was not disclosed.

He leaves behind a powerful legacy of unforgettable characters and cinematic moments.
