Mark from MCAP Carpentry started his business in 2020 as a one-man operation, doing everything himself quoting, labour, materials, paperwork.

The turning point came on a commercial fit-out job, carrying plasterboard up a staircase. Halfway up, he realised he’d underestimated the workload.

Right then, he got a call about a government-funded apprenticeship program offering school-based apprentices.

Still out of breath, he said “Yep, I’ll take one.”

Since then, his approach to hiring in construction has been simple:

✅ Only bring people in when the workload justifies it
✅ Let the program and schedule dictate resourcing
✅ Don’t wait until you’re behind to call in help

It’s not about ego, it’s about maintaining standards and delivering on time.
