This educational video documents awareness and sensory development in an African Spotted Eagle-Owl owlet (Bubo africanus).

Over the course of this observation, the owlet is seen actively watching the surrounding environment, including birds moving in nearby trees. These behaviours reflect the development of visual attention, head tracking, and environmental awareness, which are essential skills for survival outside the nest.

Sensory development in owlets includes the gradual refinement of vision, hearing, and spatial awareness, allowing the young owl to interpret movement, distance, and sound within its environment.

This footage was recorded in a purpose-built owl nest box placed approximately 3 metres above ground in a private garden in Johannesburg, South Africa. The owlet is being raised naturally by an adult female.
