South East Florida 2024 - Part 3: Scuba Diving Key Largo Spiegel Grove and Reefs with Horizon Divers

Описание к видео South East Florida 2024 - Part 3: Scuba Diving Key Largo Spiegel Grove and Reefs with Horizon Divers

A compilation of footage taken during my four dives with Horizon Divers in July 2024.

Shot with GoPro Hero 10 at 4K/60fps and (2) Backscatter Macro Wide 4300 video lights. No red filter. The underwater footage has minor color correction. The speed of certain clips has been slightly altered for dramatic effect.

My rematch with the Spiegel Grove. Back in 2021 I got my Advanced Open Water with Horizon Divers. Two of these dives were done on the Spiegel Grove. At that time it was the deepest dive I had done and challenging with a lot of current. Both of those dives were under 20 minutes and it was a truly humbling experience. I was green and super nervous. Now a few years later I returned and completed my 200th dive on the second of these tanks. My dives averaged at 40 minutes and were only interrupted by No Decompression Limits. I finished both dives with over 1000psi remaining. I've come a long way. The dives were still challenging. Our bodies were blown sideways by the strong currents like a flag on a flagpole but with experience it was much more manageable. We saw plenty of reef sharks, schools of fish and other interesting marine life on the wreck.

In the afternoon I chose to dive the shallow reefs of Key Largo to relax and enjoy the luxury of endless bottom time, endless visibility and a nice, slow pace. There's a lot to see around the rubble of the Hannah Belle and City of Washington wrecks but the actual reefs are devoid of most of it's living coral. A symptom of a working barrier reef but also of human excess and climate change.

The quote at the beginning of this video is from the 1944 film "Key Largo" starring Humphrey Bogart.
