​Corruption is a universal challenge. Corruption undermines economic development, sows distrust in democratic institutions, deepens inequality, and corrodes civil society. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has taken a strong position in combatting corruption. What drives corruption? Why does corruption matter? What are the economic costs of corruption? Which anti-corruption strategies are the most effective? And what is the most effective role for the IMF to perform (or refrain from) in anti-corruption reform?
