String Quartet No. 1 (2008), by Scott Lee (b. 1988)

Scott Lee is an American composer of concert music who recently graduated from Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music. Currently, Lee is pursuing his masters in composition at the Peabody Conservatory, where he studies with Michael Hersch.

Here are the composer's notes about this piece:

"I. The first movement consists of a series of fugues. Each fugue explores a different way of making the voices distinct. The first fugue is homorhythmic, and therefore distinguishes the voices by means of different registers. The second uses different tempi, while the third is a more traditional fugue in five voices on four instruments.
"II. The second movement is a single undeveloped thought.
"III. The third movement is rhythmic and full of energy. It develops both Latin rhythms and metric modulations and brings the piece to a boisterous finish."
