Amazing moment Octopus is spotted riding a Shark

A research team from the University of Auckland was out studying feeding frenzies in December 2023 when they came across something far more remarkable: an octopus taking a ride on a shark’s back.

Wednesday Davis sent up a drone to investigate, while her colleague Esther Stuck recorded underwater video.

The shark was identified as a short-fin mako, and its tentacled passenger as a Maori octopus.
Professor Rochelle Constantine said this made the combination all the more mysterious, as “octopus are mostly on the seabed while short-fin mako sharks don’t favour the deep.”

“The ‘sharktopus’ encounter is a reminder of the wonders of the ocean. One of the best things about being a marine scientist is that you never know what you might see next in the sea. By supporting conservation initiatives, we can help to ensure that such extraordinary moments keep happening,” Constantine said.
