Blackwell Oklahoma took a direct hit from an F5 twister on May 25 1955. 20 people were killed and 80 blocks of buildings and homes were destroyed. The city's largest employers, Hazel Atlas Glass Plant and Acme Foundry were also wiped out.

The Blackwell twister of 1955 was part of the Great Plains tornado outbreak that struck the southern and central U.S Great Plains States on May 25–26, 1955. It produced at least 46 tornadoes across seven states, the most vicious were the F5 tornadoes in Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Udall, Kansas causing the most of the deaths. The outbreak killed 102 from three tornadoes while injuring hundreds more. Unusual electromagnetic activity was observed.

Television crews from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Wichita covered the destruction and reporter Hugh Finnerty from Tulsa's CBS affiliate is shown here interviewing civil defense personnel and citizens.
