Iran’s first drone carrier, Shahid Bagheri, was converted from a commercial container ship. The project started in 2022 and continued until 2024. After extensive sea trials, it officially joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy in February 2025 during a major ceremony in Bandar Abbas.

The warship is about 240 meters long, 32 meters wide, with a draft of 12 meters and a displacement of 35,000 to 42,000 tons. It uses heavy diesel engines, reaches speeds of 20 to 25 knots, and has long endurance for extended naval missions without frequent refueling.

The flight deck is around 180 meters with a ski-jump ramp to launch heavy drones. A large internal hangar and elevator connect to the deck, providing space for dozens of UAVs and helicopters. Side doors and cranes allow fast deployment of missile boats, increasing combined naval operations.

The carrier is armed with 30mm cannons, Gatling guns, short-range air defense missiles, and anti-ship cruise missile launchers. It carries Mohajer-6, Ababil-3, Homa VTOL drones, and small jet UAVs like Qaem. These systems enhance surveillance, precision strike capability, swarm tactics, and electronic warfare.

The main mission is long-range drone operations, maritime surveillance, securing shipping lanes, and supporting naval fleets. It reduces risks for manned ships, extends Iran’s reach into the Indian Ocean, and boosts deterrence power. Despite limitations such as no catapult and a narrow deck, it marks a significant leap in Iran’s naval capabilities.
