Correction: the little Nankin bantams (small orange chickens) are on the list of rare and heritage breed chickens but are no longer threatened by extinction! They were nearly extinct for 300 years though. The Nankin is an ancient chicken breed that’s thought to be one of the oldest known true bantam chickens. For those of you who aren’t crazy chicken people, a “bantam” is a chicken of a small breed. Silkies would be another example of a bantam.

Hollands (white and black speckled chickens) may be the rarest breed of chicken still alive today. The breed was created in the 1930s to be dual-purpose (ie meat and eggs) white egg layers (white eggs were all the rage at the time). Apparently there once was a white feathered Holland, but these presumably don’t exist anymore. The barred Hollands that I have were originally made by cross breeding White Leghorn, Barred Plymouth Rock, Australorp, and Brown Leghorn.

Both breeds have cheerful dispositions and make great breeds for responsible kids. The Hollands in particular like interacting with humans, and both breeds love to forage.
