Shizuka continues her quest for the best Osaka food spots in the city of “kuidaore,” which roughly translates to “eating oneself into financial ruin.” This time, she scopes out the Osaka street food scene in Dotonbori, the city’s most popular entertainment district, discovering takoyaki’s lesser-known sibling akashiyaki, as well as classic desserts with modern Japanese twists.

“Dotonbori” is the name of both the canal and the street that runs alongside the waterway. In 1612, their namesake, the merchant Yasui Doton, invested in expanding the Umezu River into a waterway that linked the Kizugawa with the local network of canals. While he never saw this dream carried out, his cousins completed his work after his death and the canal was named after him in 1615.

In the 1620s, the area along the southern bank was a hub for theaters and playhouses, while the northern bank featured teahouses and restaurants. Unfortunately, bombings during WWII destroyed most of these theaters. However, the Shochikuza Theater was spared and its visitors can still see kabuki plays and modern performances there today.

These days, Dotonbori is a paradise for foodies, featuring mouthwatering Osaka street food, giant models of food hanging above shops, and innumerable restaurants and izakayas tucked into every corner. At night, the glow of street lights evokes a nostalgic feeling, setting a retro mood for the evening’s escapades.
