Isshin Ashina was once a renowned swordsman who served as a vassal to the Ashina Clan, a powerful family that ruled over the Ashina region. However, during the events of the game, the clan faces a grave threat from the interior ministry and is on the verge of collapse.

To save his clan and maintain their independence, Isshin makes a pact with the Divine Heir, a young boy named Kuro who possesses the power of the Dragon's Heritage. This power grants immortality to its bearer and is coveted by many.

Isshin uses his position and military expertise to protect Kuro and ensure the survival of the Ashina Clan. He becomes a father figure to Wolf, the protagonist, and teaches him the ways of the sword. Isshin is respected and loved by his people, and his leadership is vital in their struggle against the forces seeking to usurp their land.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that Isshin is terminally ill and has limited time left. Despite his deteriorating health, he remains a formidable warrior, known for his mastery of swordsmanship and his unique combat style.

In the later stages of the game, Wolf must face Isshin in a boss fight. By this point, Isshin has transformed into "Sword Saint Isshin Ashina," an even more powerful version of himself. This intense battle serves as a climactic encounter in the game's narrative.

Isshin's motivations revolve around his dedication to his clan, his loyalty to Kuro, and his desire to preserve the Ashina legacy. He is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his people and maintain their independence, even if it means resorting to drastic measures.
