The Republic serial ROBINSON CRUSOE OF CLIPPER ISLAND, starring Eskimo actor Ray Mala, the only native American leading man ever to appear in a cliffhanger, ran over budget during filming and Republic Pictures decided to try and recoup some of their investment by extending a 12 chapter cliffhanger into a 14 episode one. Redundant footage and padding were added to accomplish this, for which the serial suffered. It also gained a reputation for including "cheater" endings in which something that happened in the "cliffhanger" isn't present in the "take-out" episode.

This new edit of the serial was created to address both of these issues as well as trying out a new experimental color-tinting process developed by the Squadron called "Malavision." It presents the story in double-length episodes to eliminate some cheater endings and make chapters feel more substantial, and repeated scenes and padding has been removed to more closely approximate the content of the original 12-chapter serial as planned before it was messed with by Republic. It is not intended to represent the original release but is a new, streamlined presentation of the story for home video viewing, hence the new title.
