About the story: Josef Wagner was once one of the most powerful Nazi governors in Germany — a double Gauleiter, a respected veteran of the First World War, and a trusted figure in the rising Nazi Party. Yet his story is unlike that of other high-ranking officials. While he helped implement early Nazi policies, including the Nisko Plan and the brutal displacement of Jews and Poles in annexed territories, he later became a target of Heinrich Himmler and Martin Bormann. His Catholic faith, his independence, and his refusal to blindly follow ideological fanaticism made him an enemy within his own regime. This documentary explores Wagner’s dramatic rise and fall: from his early service in the Imperial German Army and his ascent through the SA, to his sudden public humiliation, expulsion from the Nazi Party, and final arrest by the Gestapo. After the failed July 20 plot against Hitler, Wagner’s name appeared in papers linked to the conspirators — enough for the regime to mark him for death. Imprisoned, interrogated, and ultimately executed in the final days of the war, Wagner became a symbol of the inner fractures of the Nazi hierarchy. Through archival evidence and eyewitness accounts, we examine how a loyal Nazi official became a hunted traitor, uncovering the ruthless political struggles, ideological conflicts, and personal rivalries inside Hitler’s collapsing Reich.
