THE DERBY - COLOUR

(11 Jun 1978) There was a large crowd at Epsom for the 199th running of the Derby Stakes. ® This year's field was considered to be a very open one, with Lester Piggott on 'Inkerman' starting as favourite. The twenty-nine runners were very much together around most of the course, with 'Hawaiian Sound' ridden by American jockey, Willie Shoemaker, leading. ® With 'Hawaiian Sound' looking certain to win, 'Shirley Heights' moved up from fourth place to cross the line first. It was a magnificent win for Greville Starkey and 'Shirley Heights', with 'Hawaiian Sound' second and 'Remainder Man' third.
