Описание к видео Star Wars Attack of the Clones Silent Cut: Example 3

Color Scraps is a series dedicated to projects documenting some emulation processes or experimental film projects I'm working on (I/E just an excuse to post the dumb things I've been screwing around with Davinci Resolve)

This is example 3, if you want to read more about the thought behind this, example 1 has a more in depth description.

The process for making this:

For the main file I used a digital scan of a Attack of the Clones 35mm print. Attack of the Clones was essentially the first major digital film to be made and because I'm trying to emulate film, it was nice to skip a step needed to get the proper grain/halation/blooming. And it looks great! Other than just desaturating it, I pushed exposure/contrast a bit to give it more of a nitrate look to fit the period.

To create the title cards, I used some black frames from the 35mm scan file as a background to keep the black point consistent, added an extra blooming for the text and grain, and to top it off, I added the galactic republic logo subtly overlayed in the background to give it a bit more texture while also making it feel closer to Star Wars.

Some challenges: While editing it I ran into a problem figuring out the pacing of the title cards. Because the film is already cut together (duh) and the music is set in stone to the visuals (Williams timing out musical cues for visual moments), pacing out the cards was a lot more difficult than I imagined. It's definitely not impossible, but probably the best version of this idea would be cutting it without music and reorchestrating the entire score to that cut (which is not even remotely possible). So in the end, some title cards might be too quick or slow, but it was the best I could do.

Another challenge was cropping it. The native aspect ratio of Attack of the Clones is 2.35:1, so cropping it to 1.33:1 to fit the silent film ratio basically cuts the image size in half (the sensor of the camera they used shot natively 16:9, in post they matted it to 2.35:1. If a version with the open matte ratio existed, I would have way more room to crop and reframe, but you can't get everything you want). I avoided any sort of digital tracking as it made it feel like those old pan and scan VHS/DVDs, which wasn't what I was going for. I think in this one the limitations of that start to become obvious.

On Ex 3: This is probably the weakest of the 3 examples. Like I mentioned above, the reframing on this is tough. There's not like a Medium Shot or Closeup of Mace Windu in this whole scene so when trying to cut in the title cards near the beginning for his lines, it gets pretty confusing on when he's saying things vs Yoda. I tried my best but it does kind of look like Yoda is saying every bit of dialogue. Because of cropping, I had to take a 2 shot of Windu and Kenobi and split it into 2 Medium Closeups, which kind of screwed up the editing pattern a bit getting both of their reactions. Also man that dialogue is tough. It's just wordy nonsense and reading it on screen, it's just a very strange conversation (Obi Wan, after talking about where Anakin is, randomly brings up how the clones were awesome and made them win for no reason??). It's all very stilted and weird, a really good showcase on how poorly Lucas handles mass amounts of exposition. Obviously all of this is in service so Yoda can say "The clones wars have begun" (in hindsight i would've underlined "Clone wars" in the title card to give it more of an emphasis) before the ending montage, which works well enough. What's interesting is that I think this example shows the best and worse impulses of Lucas a storyteller: People standing completely still spouting wordy exposition but then cutting to really solid visual storytelling. The ending montage rocks! Pretty much all mainline star wars films end with these wordless musical montages and they always work so well. With just the visuals and Williams music, You get all the basic beats communicated properly; The clones being shipped out, Palpatine at the head, Bail Organa looking down in shame sort of seeing what's to come, and then the wedding as Anakin and Padme make a choice that is might jeopardize their lives. The score bends and change to give the right mood and feeling to communicate what's happening. Really simple stuff but perfect. Kudos to you Lucas! Just maybe edit your scripts next time instead of shooting the first draft ok?

Anyways, I think that's all I have to say.
