When four Catholic women presented themselves for ordination in Manhattan, the worldwide Roman Catholic Womenpriests movement entered a new phase in its presence in the United States.
At Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village, Andrea M. Johnson of Annapolis, Maryland, and Eleonora Marinaro of Port Richey, Florida, were welcomed as priests; Gabriella Velardi Ward of Staten Island, New York, and Gloria Ray Carpeneto of Baltimore, Maryland, became deacons.
The Manhattan ordination—following on the heels of two May ordination ceremonies in Canada—were the first of four US regional RCWP ordinations set this summer, including one in Minnesota, one in California, and one in Oregon. Together, the four US ceremonies will bring the number of ordinands in North America to 40, including (for the first time) two men.
Originally set for Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in mid-Manhattan, an RCWP ordination was forced out of its contracted setting ten days ago because (the group was told) of concern for inter-church relations at the international level. This is the first time such action has been taken against them by Vatican sources, an RCWP spokesperson said.
Officiating at all four ceremonies was Bishop Patricia Fresen, of Germany, the shepherd of the North American community of RCWP. Worldwide, the RCWP community has over 50 ordained, and over 100 candidates in preparation.
