The “mother of breast cancer immunology” had her early cancer research dismissed. Watch what she did and her advice to women in science.

In this conversation between Nora Disis, MD, associate dean of translational science at the University of Washington and the director of the Cancer Vaccine Institute and UW Medicine oncologist Shaveta Vinayak, MD, Dr. Disis tells the story of her first podium talk about breast cancer immunology at a major conference. After her presentation, an older male scientist walked up to the mic and asked her why she was studying something so stupid.

Twenty years later, Dr. Disis is a leading expert in tumor immunology and runs the largest academic group in the U.S. dedicated to the development of cancer vaccines. Dr. Disis and the team of researchers at the Cancer Vaccine Institute at UW Medicine in Seattle are developing vaccines for breast, colon, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic, sarcoma, lung and bladder cancers to both treat and prevent cancer and its recurrence. Through clinical trials, these cancer vaccines have already helped many patients live longer, healthier lives. And the Institute is just a few years away from having vaccines available for all patients.

The Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) at UW Medicine was established 20 years ago by Dr. Nora Disis, known as the “Mother of Cancer Vaccines,” and is a collaboration of scientists, doctors, nurses, patients and philanthropists all working together to outsmart cancer.

As the largest academic research group dedicated to the development of cancer vaccines, their goal is to bring the power of precision medicine and cancer immunology out of the lab and into the lives of people to treat, and ultimately prevent, cancer and its recurrence. Their “multi-antigenic” vaccines target multiple proteins that appear in high levels in cancer tissue and are designed to elicit a specific type of immune system response known to be effective at killing cancer cells. These methods are unique to the CVI and set them apart from other cancer vaccine research.
