In 1975, German-Italian director Wario was struggling to make a hit. His two most recent films Four Flies in Gray Garlic and Have a Rotten Day! underperformed. One day, seeing the success of Mondo Ratto made by film rival Foreman Spike, Wario decided to make a mondo film and traveled to Africa.

During his trip, production proved to be difficult. He couldn’t find the right shot, the animals would run away or try to attack the camera, or his camera would be out of focus. Wario also had to resort to guerrilla filmmaking due his small budget and skeleton crew. Which largely consisted of his friends. This would lead to Wario getting kicked out of certain places due to him not having the permission to shoot in the area.

On February 18th, Wario was driving around the plains when he found a group of lions. He, for whatever reason, decided to get out of the car for an up close shot. This would result in a male lion mauling him to death in front of his friends and an anonymous group of tourists. Who happened to record the whole event.

This meme is inspired by the infamous lion attack scene in the 1975 Italian mondo film Savage Man, Savage Beast.
