How To Series: Seahorse Pouch Evacuation

Is your seahorse floating? This video shows how to remove air from a seahorse's pouch.

Gas Bubble Disease is a common condition in captive seahorses. Male seahorses are prone to accumulating gas in the pouch, causing problems with swimming, feeding and reproduction. This air often needs to be manually removed.

*note: air in the pouch is not caused by air bubbles or protein skimmers. The cause in seahorses is not clear, but ccommonly believed to be excessive organics in the aquarium. Seahorses eat a lot of food, and do not completely digest it, which can cause an overload of dissolved organic matter. These are the types of tanks that GBD is more likely to occur in.
