I heard somewhere that you might be able to save Solaire of Astora from going mad without using the Chaos Servant shortcut that you can open by donating 30 humanity to Quelaag's sister. The trick was reportedly that you need to run from the bonfire just after Centipede Demon through Lost Izalith and across the bridge with the titanite demon towards the shortcut door and the dastardly chaos bug without a) dying and b) resting at other bonfires. This is me trying to make that trek to find out if there's any truth to it.

Even though the tl;dr is "no", I did touch the bonfire I started from and I did talk to him there, so without those steps? Maybe. Wouldn't count on it, though.
