Quando o carro quebrou, eu estava em uma ligação: When the car broke down, I was on a call
Toda vez que cozinhei sozinha, fiz pratos deliciosos: Every time I cooked by myself, I made delicious dishes (unusual)
Toda vez que cozinhava sozinha, fazia pratos deliciosos: Whenever I cooked by myself, I made delicious dishes (common)
Eu nadei e estudei antes de voltar para casa: I swam and studied before coming back home
Eu nadava e estudava antes de voltar para casa: I used to swim and study before going back home
