Why is it that drink giants can bottle and sell Detroit water but consumers who are broke and can’t pay a water bill are getting their water cut off? They pay taxes why is it that the tax payers water is getting shut making their friends, neighbors and loved more prone to covid – since they can no longer wash their hands – but the profiteers can keep making money on the taxpayers investment?

I’m talking Pepsi and Coca Cola. The Guardian is reporting that Coca cola has a 262,000 sq ft Coca-Cola manufacturing facility that churns out beverages including Dasani bottled water. Dasani has generated more than $1bn in US sales in the past year. That comes from market research firm IRI.

And bottled water sales have risen 57% over the same period last year. The bottled water that is sold in the US comes from the same city sources that supply tap water. So drink the tap water for free. Consumer Reports says the cost to buy the city water is so cheap that once bottled, the water is sold at a mark-up of about 133 times the cost. Pepsi bottles its Aquafina water brand in Detroit the same way.

So why aren’t coca cola and Pepsi stepping up and paying those water bills to keep everyone safe? They are living off the back of the taxpayers, paying some folks I would bet substandard wages, probably have people working for them without adequate health insurance.. so pony up and help out society or they should get out. This is not charity….this is smart….if you cannot wash your hands you are putting in everyone in jeopardy.

Bringing me to our slay word execrable for extremely bad or unpleasant. These companies have the most execrable morals and values I have ever seen. In Detroit, 2,800 homes are estimated to be without running water at the start of the pandemic. You get your water shut off in Detroit if you fall $150 behind. That is unless you are a bottler. Bottlers in Detroit have racked up tens of thousands of dollars of past due water bills that went unpaid for months. But not once has their access to water been shut off over the period examined.

Now if your water is shut off then you have to buy water. Ding! But the water you are buying at a 133% markup is city water. The same water you are paying for and the same water system you are supporting through your other taxes.

And by the way… help Denver and Phoenix….Coca-Cola and Pepsi get water from you too…so stop shutting off the water to the citizens.
