Описание к видео #Song1221

Conor Oberst was born to an IT manager for Mutual of Omaha and a public school director, the youngest of three boys. The eldest, Matthew Jr., would later perform in the band Sorry About Dresden, and would fund one of Conor's self-released indie albums, befoer his untimely death in 2016. Conor started writing and releasing music at a very early age. When he was only twelve, Ted Stevens of Mayday invited Conor onstage to play. The next year, he self-released his debut at 13 on a DIY label that would later become Saddle Creek Records. He also co-founded the band that would eventually become The Faint, as well as another called Commander Venus (with Tim Kasher, who would co-found Cursive with Ted Stevens). Conor also formed Bright Eyes as a solo project in 1995, and after Commander Venus disbanded, released two albums in 1998. 2000's Fevers and Mirrors was ranked #170 on Pitchfork's top 200 albums of the 2000s. In 2005, Conor released two albums simultaneously: the folk-tinged I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the electronic Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Both are great albums, but I'm Wide Awake was slightly more commercially successful, selling over 500,000 copies to 250,000 for Digital Ash. "Road to Joy" closes the first album. Says Pitchfork about the song, Conor "justifies the joke of cadging Beethoven's most famous theme [Ode to Joy], drives the cascading horns and searing guitars, and finally, finally screams his head off. Give yourself to it and you'll understand that when Oberst's staring so piercingly from all those magazine covers, this is what he's looking at." I like to think that if Garden State had been released a year later, the finale of "Road to Joy" is what would have been playing when the three main characters stood at the top of the quarry and screamed into the abyss.
