Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, the head of the Jagadguru Murugarajendra Vidyapeetha Mutt, was detained by the police in Karnataka on Thursday after they received a report of two young students in Chitradurga being sexually assaulted. According to police sources, the seer was apprehended at the mutt.
On August 26, Mysuru police filed a rape complaint against Shivamurthy Muruga Sharanaru under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, and Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Two girls told members of the state Child Welfare Committee that the seer sexually assaulted them between January 1, 2019, and June 6, 2022. Later, the case was transferred to Chitradurga district police.
