1. Historical Background
After the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Islam was led by the first four caliphs:
Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA)
Hazrat Umar (RA)
Hazrat Usman (RA)
Hazrat Ali (AS)
During the rule of Hazrat Ali (AS), internal conflicts and fitna (civil strife) increased, leading to his martyrdom.
Hazrat Imam Hasan (AS) briefly became caliph but made a peace treaty with Hazrat Muawiya to prevent Muslim bloodshed.
After Hazrat Muawiya’s death, his son Yazid became caliph, whose rule was widely considered oppressive and unjust.
2. Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and the Decision to Resist
Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, knowing it would support injustice.
People of Kufa invited Imam Hussain (AS) to lead them against Yazid’s tyranny.
He decided to leave Makkah for Kufa, accompanied by his family and 72 loyal companions, fully aware of the dangers ahead.
3. Journey to Karbala
Imam Hussain (AS) and his caravan traveled through harsh desert conditions.
Yazid’s forces intercepted them at Karbala, blocking access to water from the Euphrates River, leaving the camp to suffer extreme thirst, heat, and hunger.
For 9 days before Ashura, Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions were surrounded, praying, guiding, and preparing for the ultimate test.
4. The Eve of Ashura (9th Muharram)
On the night of Tasu’a, Imam Hussain (AS) warned his companions that the next day would demand the ultimate sacrifice.
His companions willingly chose to stay, preferring martyrdom over surrender.
Imam Hussain (AS) reminded them of their faith and moral duty, emphasizing that truth must be defended even against overwhelming odds.
5. Ashura – 10th Muharram
On the morning of Ashura, the sun rose over a parched battlefield.
Imam Hussain (AS) led Fajr prayer, after which he delivered his final message to the opposing army, urging them to abandon oppression.
Yazid’s forces insisted on allegiance or battle; Imam Hussain (AS) refused to bow. His famous words were:
“I will never bow to tyranny or injustice.”
6. The Battle
The battle began with arrows and sword fights.
Each loyal companion of Imam Hussain (AS) fought bravely and attained martyrdom, including:
Hazrat Abbas (AS), the flag-bearer, who tried to bring water for the thirsty camp
Hazrat Ali Akbar (AS), Imam Hussain’s son, who resembled the Prophet ﷺ in appearance and character
Hazrat Qasim (AS), the young nephew, who fought valiantly
Ali Asghar (AS), the six-month-old infant, who was tragically killed while Imam Hussain (AS) offered him for water
Finally, Imam Hussain (AS) himself was martyred after enduring severe wounds, maintaining his faith and principles until his last breath.
7. Aftermath
The surviving women and children, including Lady Zainab (RA) and Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (AS), were taken captive and marched to Kufa and Damascus.
Lady Zainab (RA) became a powerful voice exposing Yazid’s cruelty.
The battle left Karbala’s land soaked in blood, but it created an eternal symbol of truth, courage, and sacrifice.
8. Legacy
Karbala is remembered as a timeless lesson of faith, justice, and moral courage.
Every year, Muslims commemorate Ashura and Arbaeen, reflecting on the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
The event continues to inspire resistance against oppression and standing up for truth, regardless of the personal cost.
