Heart failure occurs when the heart doesn't pump blood effectively, leading to symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. Despite this, many people with heart failure live full lives. The progression of heart failure is classified into four stages:

Stage A includes individuals at risk for heart failure but without symptoms or structural heart disease. Risk factors include family history, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, metabolic syndrome, alcohol abuse, rheumatic fever, and certain medicine use.

Stage B, or silent heart failure, involves structural heart disease or increased heart filling pressures without symptoms. This stage includes conditions like heart muscle damage from a heart attack or genetic abnormalities. Increased pressures, measured by PCWP or LVEDP, indicate diastolic dysfunction.

Stage C includes people with current or past symptoms of heart failure, such as shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, irregular heartbeat, and rapid weight gain.

Stage D is advanced heart failure, where symptoms severely impact daily life and often require repeated hospitalizations.

The New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification further categorizes heart failure in stages C and D:

Class I: No limitation of physical activity.
Class II: Slight limitation; comfortable at rest, but ordinary activity causes symptoms.
Class III: Marked limitation; comfortable at rest, but less than ordinary activity causes symptoms.
Class IV: Severe limitation; symptoms at rest, often bedridden.

These classifications help healthcare professionals tailor treatment to the severity of the condition.
