Описание к видео The sound of an 200 years old antique german wooden flute

I have been trying out an original 6 keyed Terz flute made by Gottfried Schuster in Neukirchen Germany in early 19th century. It came in a quite good condition when I receive it a few days ago. The main problem was a re-opened repaired crack on the head-joint. After some cleanings and simple repairs, although not in top condition, it plays and responses already very well. The old fork-fingerings also works great.

A normal fingering for D would give a F, a 3rd higher, on a Terz (3rd) flute - hence the name. Its range lies in between a normal flute and a piccolo. Many Terz flute survived, so it seems they were very popular and had a specific role.

But seems no one really written or mentioned about the Terz flutes and not much music was known written for them. It is kind of a mystery on why and how they were used. Maybe they were meant for young players with smaller hands? Maybe they were used in wind ensembles/outdoor/military performances? Maybe flutists would switch to it when the music is too high or the tonality too difficult to play on a normal flute? What more other usage could you think of?

The pitch of the flute is around A=440Hz. The music is Kuhlau's 12 Variations, Op10b No.3 (ca.1810) with a lot of "notes sensible".

Video and audio were recorded with my old android phone...
