When a hip replacement surgery is performed, a damaged, worn-out hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant.

Implants have four main combinations of femoral head and acetabular materials: metal-on-polyethylene, metal-on-metal, ceramic-on-ceramic, and ceramic-on-polyethylene.

The selection of implant used by the surgeon typically depends upon various factors, including Patient age, Patient activity level & Particular deformities/abnormalities of the hip or knee.

Ceramic on Plastic (polyethylene) implant uses metal parts that fit within the bone, but the bearing surface for the ball or head is made of ceramic material. The socket bearing or the cup is made of a special plastic called polyethylene.

Ceramic head implants are designed to be the most resistant to wear. Ceramic heads are very hard and very smooth and thus cause less wearing of the polyethylene.
